Fans of Don Don Donki, you can now shop your favourite Japanese goods from the store on GrabMart. Their offerings on the app include snacks, ready-to-eat meals, alcoholic and non-alcoholic beverages, and daily essentials.

Just today, Grab SEA announced their partnership with Don Don Donki in the region, starting with Malaysia, Singapore and Thailand.

For those who are unfamiliar with Don Don Donki, they’re a Japanese chain discount store (better known by the name Don Quijote in Japan) selling a variety of imported yet affordable Japanese products.

To help you gauge their popularity and demand, there are over 580 Don Quijote stores in Japan and 12 Don Don Donki stores overseas as of July 7, 2020. They finally opened their first Malaysian outlet about a week ago in Lot 10, Bukit Bintang, taking up to 3 floors of space.

Not too long ago, Don Don Donki also launched their Shopee store which delivers nationwide. How the Grab store differs from their Shopee store though is that the former has a better variety of perishables including ready-to-eat meals like Karaage Bento, Chicken Katsu Don, and more, all of which can be delivered on-demand.

However, they don’t have daily essentials like face masks, which you can get from their Shopee store.

From the perspective of a consumer and as someone who’s enthusiastic about Japanese goods (especially discounted ones), Don Don Donki’s presence in GrabMart makes it easier to purchase such products and enjoy more variety, with their closest competitor being Shojikiya

While GrabMart did list Japanese goods prior to Don Don Donki’s presence in Malaysia, they were mostly scattered across different grocers and convenience stores. So having Don Don Donki in GrabMart designates a central store where I can look for all these goods in one place at affordable prices.

Don Don Donki’s incorporation into GrabMart is also timely, especially now that it’s safer to skip the queue in their wildly popular physical store during the pandemic. As of now, however, the next-day delivery option is only available in Singapore, with other countries to follow soon.

This partnership isn’t just benefitting fans in the e-commerce sense either, since Malaysian consumers visiting the physical outlet (and any future ones) can now pay via GrabPay and receive GrabRewards points for their transactions.

These points as usual can be redeemed for discounts on Grab services and at GrabRewards’ partnering stores. That aside, Don Don Donki actually also has their own app which you can register as a member and earn dMiles points to redeem coupons.

A second Don Don Donki outlet is anticipated to open this year too at Tropicana Gardens Mall, Petaling Jaya.
