Grab Singapore announced today (July 7) its 2030 Transport Sustainability Goal, where it has committed to operate via a full fleet running on cleaner energy by 2030.
This goal is set as part of the broader GrabForGood initiative that seeks to positively impact three core groups: People, Partners, and the Planet.
The ride-hailing giant has unveiled the JustGrab Green pilot and Green Programme, which will offer consumers the option to play a part in reducing their carbon footprint. These two initiatives are slated to go live on 14 July 2021.
The company will also be expanding its electric and hybrid vehicle fleet through its rental arm, GrabRentals.
The efforts are in line with Singapore Green Plan 2030, which includes the country’s roadmap for electric vehicles, and the vision of having all vehicles operate on cleaner energy by 2040.

JustGrab Green
JustGrab Green is a new ride option which is serviced by a fleet that comprises electric or hybrid vehicles of a minimal VES A2 band.
The VES is based on a car or taxi’s carbon dioxide emissions, plus emissions of hydrocarbons, carbon monoxide and nitrogen oxides. Vehicles in the VES A2 band emit less than 125g of carbon dioxide per kilometre.
Some examples of such vehicle types include Hyundai Kona Electric, Toyota Prius and Kia Niro Hybrid. Carbon emissions from these vehicles can be reduced by an estimated 55 per cent, compared to a regular vehicle running on petrol.
JustGrab Green will first be made available to passengers who are looking to book a ride from the central region, and will progressively be expanded to more locations.
It will also operate under the same pricing structure as JustGrab, which means that users need not pay any additional fees to enjoy the green ride.
The Green Programme
Grab recently launched a carbon offsetting feature for ride-hailing services in a bid to reduce its environment footprint.
It will be launched as the Green Programme in Singapore, and passengers can opt in to turn on the feature and pay a nominal S$0.10 when they book any ride.
According to a press release from Grab, the super app will match the S$0.10 contribution for up to three million rides.
The full contribution will go into carbon offset and solarisation projects in Singapore and the region. Grab will collaborate with Sembcorp Industries to identify solarisation projects jointly between the two companies.
It will also collaborate with Shell to purchase carbon credits generated from the Katingan Mentaya Project in Indonesia. The project restores natural forests and conserves peatland habitats, preventing the release of greenhouse gases equivalent to 447 million tonnes of carbon dioxide over 60 years.
