Singapore digital telco Grid Mobile announced today (October 7) in an email to its subscribers that it will be ceasing service on 6 December 2021.

Grid Mobile first launched in Singapore in June 2019, and was the fifth mobile virtual network operator (MVNO) to enter the market.

It is a joint venture between Singtel and ST Telemedia, and its no-contract plans and upsized mobile data are targeted towards the millennials.

Grid Mobile did not cite any particular reason for its cessation, but with its departure, it said that it has made arrangements with an alternative provider, GOMO by Singtel, to offer subscribers an “exclusive upsized bundle”.

At S$17.90 for 12 months, subscribers can enjoy 50GB of data, 500 minutes of talktime and 500 SMSes.

After the one-year period ends, the package will be permanently reduced to 20GB, 200 minutes and 200 SMSes respectively at the same pricing with promo code ‘GRID50-G1XG’.

The first 5,000 Grid Mobile customers to successfully transfer their line to GOMO will also receive S$20 worth of GOMO add-on credits for a limited time.

The number transfer process to GOMO will be free and subscribers can continue to use their mobile services with minimal disruption. Subscribers will also receive an unactivated GOMO SIM card and onboarding guide via post within the next three days.

Customers will be given a two-month notice period prior to cessation of service to transfer their numbers to other service providers.

“We are also mindful that you may have accumulated gridPoints in your account. We are happy to waive the requirement to a minimum of 1,000 points to enjoy a bill rebate,” said Grid Mobile in an email.

“As such, Grid Mobile will provide a bill rebate on every gridPoint below 5,000 gridPoints for ease of redemption. Redemption of 5,000 gridPoints and above will be given in the form of cashback.”

These gridPoints are part of Grid Mobile’s strategy to stand out among other players. It introduced a referral and loyalty rewards programme, in which it rewards customers with gridPoints on their birthdays, for their loyalty, and for recommending the telco to a friend.

By accumulating these points, customers can redeem them to offset their bills, get cashback, or offers from various merchants like Lazada, Spotify and Grab.
