Love it or hate it, the drama series Game of Thrones have taken the television world by storm (and by storm, yes, it’s safe to say that Daenerys Targaryen and her long blonde hair and big doe eyes have surely captured the hearts of many viewers).

Since the year 2011, Game of Thrones is renowned for leaving fans gaping, usually with surprise, horror, and disgust. The show, which was adapted from a series of fantasy novels written by George R. R. Martin, does not shy away from controversial themes, such as rape, prostitution, incest, and murder. Needless to say, there is much that we can learn from the world of the Seven Kingdoms, where only the fittest, smartest, and luckiest survive.

Here are the top 5 survival tips that we can extract from the show and apply it in this dog-eat-dog world. Be warned though, there are spoilers ahead!

1. Choose Your Allies Carefully.. and Keep an Eye on Them

The journey to fight for the Iron Throne is a long and dangerous one, one must be wise when picking a side to join forces with as one wrong move could cost a life, or dozens of lives as seen in The Red Wedding. Robb Stark, the King of the North, had no idea what was in store for him when he travelled to the Freys, obviously under the impression that Lord Walder Frey was still in alliance with him although he broke the marriage pact between their houses. He and his household paid for that dearly.

2. Don’t Be a Jerk

If you’re in a position of power and authority, it is never a good idea to scoff at the people below you and create enemies. Sure it feels good for a while, but let’s face it, someone will take you down someday and it won’t be pretty. King Joffrey has had his fair share of fun cutting off Marillion’s tongue, forcing Sansa to look upon her father’s decapitated head, torturing Littlefinger’s prostitutes, and making snide cruel remarks at all of his subjects before he was suddenly poisoned to death. Everyone can finally heave a sigh of relief and glasses clink together in celebration all across the land.

3. Never Underestimate Women

Daenerys Targaryen started off as an exile sold into marriage against her will, from there she has grown into a queen commanding and leading a massive army of loyal soldiers who would lay down their life for their beloved Khaleesi. Men have belittled her in the past, but her fearlessness, wisdom, and strength has led her thus far. Okay so no, she isn’t perfect, but those gorgeous locks of hair must count for something.

4. Acting Lessons May Do You Good

Margaery Tyrell shares no love towards Joffrey and she disapproves of his dark and evil ways but she handles him like a champ. Her charm and manipulation wins his acceptance and trust, causing even his mother, Cersei to lose influence over him. Amidst all the cruelty of her husband-to-be, that poker face of hers would make Lady Gaga proud.

5. Above All Else, Persevere

Arya Stark is one tough little girl and she defies the norm of gender roles. Her innocence shattered by a continuous stroke of misfortune and the presence of death around her, she replaces her feeling of loss with her determination of revenge.
