At times, a picture speaks a thousand words.

With pen in hand, Spanish illustrator Luis Quiles (aka Gunsmithcat) tackles some of the most sticky issues that many dare only brush the surface of, in his own darkly humourous way.

With copious references to sex and violence, Guiles tackles issues like poverty, capitalism, homophobia, creative censorship, child violence and pedophilia head on (pun intended).

On first glance, his pieces are crude and unsettling, almost to a fault. Which is probably why Deviant Art, one of the platforms through which he publishes his work, has taken many of his artworks down. But if you look behind the violence, nudity and sexual references depicted, you’ll see Quile’s no-holds-barred take on his observations of humanity.

Here are a few of his art pieces. Do note that while these are already the cleaner ones, some of the references they contain are not safe for work (NSFW), so view them at your own discretion.

Shocked yet? Well perhaps that is the key to making that change you hope to see in the world around you, in which case, may these images never stop shocking you.
