Last month, we wrote about about Jordan Axani, a young Canadian man searching for anyone by the name of “Elizabeth Gallagher” who also owns a Canadian passport. The purpose of his search was to invite Elizabeth Gallagher to travel with him around the world. This may seem odd, but he is doing this to make use of the flight ticket he had bought for his now ex-girlfriend.
In November, Axani created a post on Reddit, a popular social media website, to offer the tickets to someone with the same name as his ex-girlfriend, provided she holds a Canadian passport. The post went viral and he received thousands of responses.
Huffingtonpost reported that he received 18 emails from 18 different Elizabeth Gallaghers, all with Canadian passports. Axani has now chosen his travel partner.
The lucky Elizabeth Gallagher is a 23-year-old student, a volunteer in a homeless shelter, and a part time office administrator. The winning message (shown below) is what she tweeted to Axani.
Gallagher met all the requirements posted by Axani – full name Elizabeth Quinn Gallagher and holding a Canadian passport. Everything seems to be going well for Axani. Unfortunately, there is one small problem: Gallagher is attached.
According to the Daily Mail, she has a boyfriend and the boyfriend is, unsurprisingly, not thrilled about this news. Gallagher told the Daily Mail, “He understands that I’ve always wanted to travel so while he’s not happy I’m taking off for nearly a month at Christmas with a random guy, he’s smiling through it.’ Gallagher is serious about her current relationship and they have plans to purchase a home together.
Axani does not think of it as a problem, however, and said that the trip will be purely platonic.
Thanks to the power of social media, the story has become viral. Following this, Marriott International decided to arrange separate rooms for Axani and Gallagher during their trip.
Both of them are scheduled to depart New York City on December 21 for Milan, Italy. Axani also revealed that the trip will be documented and shared online.
His story opened him up to realize that while he is lucky to have the resources to travel around the world, others may not be so fortunate. As a result, this has inspired himself to launch a crowd-funding initiative called A Ticket Forward. With the support of Marriott Hotels & Resorts and Crowdrise, this is a charitable movement that sends people, who may otherwise be unable to do so, on a trip of a lifetime.
Hopefully, Axani and Gallagher will enjoy the trip. They may be sitting in the same plane and taking the same flights but don’t forget that only the flights are free. Gallagher will be paying for her own accommodations. Who knows? This could open the door to a life long friendship.
