Facebook has released an official statement, denying rumours that the 45 minute downtime on both Facebook and Instagram were due to online hacking group Lizard Squad.

“Earlier this evening many people had trouble accessing Facebook and Instagram. This was not the result of a third party attack but instead occurred after we introduced a change that affected our configuration systems. We moved quickly to fix the problem, and both services are back to 100% for everyone.”

Eyes were cast on Lizard Squad as the cause of this downtime when they posted several tweets regarding the downtime, allegedly taking down Tinder, AIM, and Myspace. According to a few news sources, Tinder was down as well, though there was much less fuss over it as compared to the social media giants.

Though Lizard Squad was responsible for the MAS website hacking just yesterday, it is quite unlikely that they were able to hack into Facebook’s servers. In a Reddit AMA conducted last year, Lizard Squad had joked about hacking the social media giant, but agreed that it was quite unlikely.

“Facebook have a large infrastructure that can sustain the largest cyber attacks,” they said.

Nonetheless, they warned of yet another Malaysian Airlines incident, this time an MAS email dump.
