Usually on a weekend all I wish to do is to catch up on my life and spend time with family. Groceries shopping should not be topping the chart of problems at all. However, let’s be realistic, we need groceries to survive! The basic human need for food and household supply ought to be replenished every week and sometimes I wish it could just be delivered right to my doorstep.

TESCO Stores (M) Sdn Bhd (Tesco Malaysia) is here to answer my wish with Tesco Online Shopping which provides home delivery and to add more convenience to it, they have recently partnered with Plug n Pay by CIMB Bank for cashless payment. Two thumbs up!

Plug n Pay by CIMB is Malaysia’s first ever chip-based mobile point-of-sale (mPOS) solution that offers businesses of any size an affordable yet secure way for managing electronic payments using smartphones and tablets. The Plug n Pay card reader (RRP RM250 per device ) is able to accept chip or signature-based credit and debit cards that are either branded Mastercard or Visa.

Plug n Pay transforms the mobile device into a payment portal that is enabled by the Plug n Pay mobile app and with the support of data connection, users are able to send receipts electronically to their customers via email and/or SMS text. Plug n Pay is downloadable and runs on both iOS and Android operating systems.

“We are very pleased to be able to provide the Plug n Pay by CIMB Bank payment method to all our Tesco online customers where they can be assured of a safe and cashless transaction,” said Tesco Malaysia CEO Georg Fischer to The Star at the launch of Plug n Pay at Tesco Extra, Mutiara Damansara in Petaling Jaya recently.

CIMB Group acting group CEO, Tengku Datuk Zafrul Tengku Abdul Aziz explained that upon delivery, Tesco’s Customer Delivery Assistants plugs in the portable Plug n Pay card reader into their mobile devices, which accepts credit and debit cards; and thus safely facilitating payments. Electronic receipts would be issued to customers immediately via email or SMS upon confirmation of a transaction.

Tesco Malaysia is the first hypermarket with online payment in Malaysia and offers a range of 18,000 items available online from groceries to office supplies. This payment method is available across Tesco Online Shopping home delivery services in Klang Valley, Penang and Johor Baru.

The Tesco Online Shopping is fairly easy to use. For first time users, you will need to register and provide your delivery address. Then, you could browse your groceries as such:

  • Browse the aisles by clicking on the various departments e.g. grocery. You can then filter down to a smaller category using the filters at the top of the page.
  • Search for products using the search box (the list will be alphabetically sorted)
  • Use the “Rest of shelf” link to take you to similar products.
  • Use the Favourites list, a handy tool which remembers everything you’ve previously bought online with Tesco.
  • Use the Promotions list to browse a list of products that are on promotion. You can filter the promotions by using the departments at the top of the page.

When you are all set, you will need to select a delivery slot, then complete checkout steps and payment details. There are delivery slots available in 2-hour delivery windows. These are available from 10am to 10pm, 7 days a week. Each delivery slot has a maximum capacity, so place you order well in advance to guarantee the slot you want. You can even order your shopping up to 3 weeks in advance! Besides that, the goods are delivered to customers’ homes in a temperature-controlled van. So you don’t have to worry about your goods losing their freshness or your favourite ice cream melting.

According to Tesco Delivery Lab (a very fun website!), the delivery route is calculated by the Tesco delivery system, which includes factors such as distance, time, and weight of goods. This is indeed great as it is doing good to the environment and saves fuel.

“Since the launch of our online shopping service last year, we have more than 150,000 registered online shoppers in the KlangValley, Johor Baru and Penang. We see the numbers growing every day and with the convenience of grocery shopping from home, we find that customers shop almost three times more the usual basket size compared to in-store,” Fischer added.

“Plug n Pay essentially transforms smartphones and tablets that are an integral part of our daily lives into tools of commerce that can be used to facilitate convenient and secured cashless transactions,” said Zafrul in the recent interview.

Together with the geo-location feature, this electronic payment method enables Tesco to view real-time and track the location of transaction as well as user-detail management via the mobile app and web-based Plug n Pay portal. With the recent launch, there will also be complimentary delivery with minimum purchases, e-coupon and rebates! The innovation of Plug n Play truly brings a better shopping experience for customers.
