Moms are arguably one of the hardest beings on earth to shop for. Try asking your own mother what she would like for the upcoming Mother’s Day celebration and she would likely say that she has everything she has ever wanted, or that all she wants is to see her children be happy. While this is great, it also makes it really hard to gift a gift to somebody who already “has everything in the world”.

With a little thought though, it’s not impossible to gift the queen of your life with the one thing she needs. Here’s a hint: most times it isn’t even the material things. Here are some startups that would come in handy not only during this Mother’s Day, but also throughout the year, to make her life easier.

It’s also something your mom would likely find thoughtful, so there you go, a bonus point for you right there!

1. Help out Mom with some house work.

Give your mom a day off and let her relax whilst a maid cleans up the mess you’ve left behind for your her to pick up after. Startups like MaidEasy links your mom up with service providers that specialises in basic home cleaning, carpet cleaning and even interior painting.

2. Get groceries delivered straight to her.

Carrying bagfuls of grocery after hours of shopping can be really tiring and what’s more, many Malaysian families go grocery shopping often, and this can take a toll on our moms. Why not give her a treat and have her groceries delivered right to her doorstep with the help of online grocery delivery startups like Zero.com.my, Freshcart, Jocom and Happy Fresh instead?

3. Get cooking gas sent to her.

My own mom finds it a chore to hail down the truck that delivers cooking gas from door to door and at times, she misses it and winds up not being able to cook for the day. Hence, a startup like GrabGas which delivers cooking gas right to your mom with just a click of the button, helps save not only much valuable time which can be spent together with the family, but also effort as well.

4. Have the family’s laundry picked up and cleaned.

Laundry is one of those things that just seems never ending now doesn’t it? No matter how much gets done in a day, the pile for the next day could double it easily. With a startup that cleans all the dirty laundry and delivers fresh ones to you, like Fresh Press and Mama Wosh Malaysia, you could free up hours in your mom’s life and for once have an answer to the question, “Why won’t you pick up your dirty clothes?!?”

5. Mom can have her dessert and eat it too.

Everybody deserves a treat every once in a while, more so our mothers. But treats don’t necessarily have to be of the unhealthy sort. Gelatos and fresh fruit makes the tastebuds happy but it doesn’t add too many inches around the waistline and if you have a mother who doesn’t want to eat too much sweet food, a startup like EnParty which delivers fresh fruit and gelato to her could be the answer.

6. Let Mom store precious thingamabobs in a storage space.

For items which hold sentimental value but take up too much space in your mother’s home and heart, a startup which provides storage units to store all these items in can be what your mom secretly wants for Mother’s Day. FlexiStorage is essentially a place where you can store all your items at for a small price and now, all your priceless baby photo albums can find a home there instead of taking up unnecessary space at home.

7. Get Mom a virtual helper.

For errands that your mom is too lazy or tired to get done, there’s startups that she could pick and choose from depending on her mood. For instance, BeMalas and Helpr are service providers which gets things done, so to speak. BeMalas even has a mobile app, whilst Helpr is an on-demand chat based personal assistant, available via SMS or WhatsApp. Therefore, you can just laze on couch with Mom and your cell phone on Mother’s Day, and leave the outstanding errands to the startups.

8. Get Mom a handyman.

You’ll never know when an appliance at home suddenly decides to be on its last leg, or if a wall needs a fresh new coat of paint. While moms might not need service providers often, they often do not know where to start when they really do need it. That is probably why some things remain broken at home for the longest time. Moms would definitely be able to appreciate a startup like ServisHero, Kaodim, and Recomn.com. These are portals housing a list of service providers such as plumbing, dry cleaning, electrical services, catering, and so many more—all available at mom’s dispense.

So this Mother’s Day, expose her to this world of apps, startups, and online services
