The main rule of yee sang is simple—the higher the toss, the more “ong” your year will be. Throughout the tossing ceremony, you should also be saying prosperous statements. If you’re not articulate with your new year blessings, continuously saying “huat ah” works wonders.
But after making that big mess in your dining room, wouldn’t you want to make sure the yee sang is actually delicious?
Given, yee sang is arguably already a very delicious dish. Yee sang, which is also known as yu sheng, lou sang, or the prosperity toss, traditionally features raw fish, shredded vegetables, as well as a sauce. Together, these create a delicious salad-like dish.
However, why not give your yee sang a special twist? Here are some Malaysian brands in the Klang Valley offering unique yee sang dishes this year.
1. ANTE: Ham yee sang
Up the ante with ANTE’s Jamón Serrano Loh Sang. Dubbed a “pork dish specialist”, ANTE has been releasing their take on yee sang for a few years now. Their version features slices of jamón serrano ham, a Spanish-style slow aged ham, imported from the Iberian Peninsula.
Located in 1 Utama, ANTE told us that the dish is highlighted by a natural sweetness from fresh fruits like mango, pomelo, and jackfruit which balances the savoury, nutty flavours of the ham. It also comes with a medley of vegetables along with fried potatoes, yam, and macadamia nuts.
To top it all off, there’s the house-made orange-plum sticky sauce. There are optional add-ons such as extra slices of the jamón serrano ham.
This yee sang will be available starting on January 24, 2024.

For the fruit-centric one, the dish will feature fresh orange, kiwi, avocado, strawberry, blueberry, pineapple, and pomegranate. It starts at RM88 for three to four pax, or RM138 for the one that serves eight to 10.
Meanwhile, the salmon jellyfish option comes with, well, salmon and jellyfish. The three to four pax option is RM98 while the eight to ten pax one is RM148.
Both dishes come with shredded carrots, pickled ginger, dry cucumber, white radish, pomelo, crackers, crushed peanuts, and sesame seeds. For that classic Nyonya touch of sweet, sour, and spicy flavours, the dishes also feature plum sauce, five-spice powder, and lime juice.

There are two yee sang flavours available here—Salmon Huat Yee Sang and SA Longevity Yee Sang. The latter is the vegan option.
That said, the salad chain also has bigger options for larger parties. Specifically, there are two other sizes—one that feeds three to four pax, and one for groups of six to eight.

Aside from the seafood, it will also come with crackers, snow pear, dragon scale cabbage, pickled hibiscus, pomegranate, fried lotus, purple cabbage, white yam, cucumber slices, pickled leek, papaya, white ginger, red ginger, pomelo, seaweed salad, Chinese parsley, marinated hotate carrot, white radish, groundnut, and sesame.
Customers can choose one of three sauce options—signature aromatic plum sauce, signature osmanthus plum sauce, or signature yuzu chrysanthemum plum sauce.
Aside for the jellyfish yee sang, they also have a Prosperity Romance Sashimi Yee Sang, a Prosperity Garden Fruit Yee Sang, and a King Prosperity Yee Sang.

Aside from the pork belly yee sang, Goodam also has two other options that sound just as good.

But, what about trout?
Featured by Vulcan Post in the past, Art of Salmó is a Malaysian brand that specialises in not salmon, but trout. Norwegian fjord trout, to be specific.
This Chinese New Year, Art of Salmó is offering a Lucky Yee Sang (RM88) that serves up to 10, as well as the Dragon Bliss Yee Sang (starts at RM328) which can serve up to 60. For the latter, which is more suitable for events, there’s a one-metre option as well as a two-metre option.
Both options come with a special Citrus Plum Zest, which gives a sweet and sour finish to the dish.
Aside from the salmó sashimi, other ingredients in the dish are crunchy salmon skin, carrot, radish, purple cabbage, egg, chuka kurage (seasoned jellyfish), chuka wakame (seasoned seaweed), pineapple, mandarin orange, lettuce, roasted sesame, and sunflower seed.

Plenty more fish in the sea
We’ve heard on good authority that some other restaurants that will be releasing their own take on yee sang include:
At the time of writing, they haven’t officially announced their yee sang dishes for the year, though.
In any case, this list is by no means exhaustive. We’re sure there are plenty more restaurants out there that you can support this Chinese New Year, in turn bringing some prosperity to yourself too. There’s no such thing as too much yee sang tossing, right?
