Some say that there’s no such thing as a guilty pleasure, but if you’re someone who tends to feel bad for indulging in ice cream, why not try healthier options instead?

Based on what we found, we’d say you’d be quite spoilt for choice in Malaysia, even if our list only narrows them down to proudly homegrown brands.

1. OohLaLa

OohLala was founded by sisters Kimberley and Nicola, who told Vulcan Post they aimed to create a low-calorie, low-sugar ice cream that is all-natural, but has the texture and mouthfeel of premium ice cream.

Some of the flavours OohLaLa carry are Chocolate Hazelnut, Double Fold Vanilla Bean, Earl Grey Milk Tea & Salted Cream, Mango Sticky Rice, Matcha & Roasted Mochi Rice, and Peanut Butter Fudge.

2. Wolf Pints

A brand that we’ve featured in the past, homemade low-calorie ice cream brand Wolf Pints was founded by three health-conscious friends.  

Wolf Pints carries a variety of unique flavours, though an exhaustive list of all its current offerings isn’t available.

Some of the options are Lychee Blossom, Onglai Oolong, Pulut TaiTai, Nutella Sea Salt, Blueberry Cheese Cake, Sakura Rose, and much more.

3. Calli

You might have seen this low-calorie ice cream brand in groceries around Malaysia. Calli was founded in late 2018 by a duo who has been friends since their schooling days.

Some of its latest flavours include seasonal specials Black Forest and Cookie Minster.

Calli also carries classic flavours such as Strawberry Fields, So Matcha Better, Mango Van Gogh, Ooh La La Vanilla, Choc-A-Lot, and Caramel By The Sea.  

For those looking to try a variety of different flavours, there’s the Calli Minis Classic Dairy Minipack and Calli Minis Dairy Free Multipack.

4. Softsrve

Focusing on making small batches of “kurang manis” ice cream, Softsrve was founded by four friends in 2015 who got the idea after travelling overseas.

Now run by a couple, Tommy and Debie, since 2018, the brand carries flavours like Deep Chocolate, Oolong Cha, Smokey Salted Caramel, Vanilla Cereal Milk, Rosy Earl Grey, Honey Matcha, Mango Passion Yogurt, and Mint Chocolate Chip.

The artisanal ice cream makers also have more creative flavours such as Roasted Pineapple Coconut Cheesecake, Brown Butter Pecan Vanilla, Apple Crumble Cheesecake, and so much more.

Alongside the regular pints, Softsrve also offers smaller 125ml tubs.

5. 88Keto

As the brand’s name suggests, 88Keto focuses on keto-friendly products, including its Ketococo and Ketococo Zero ice creams. All these ice creams are made with pure coconut and thus carry the fruit’s flavour.

Flavours for the Ketococo range are the plain coconut, chocolate, coffee, peanut butter, and matcha.

The Ketococo Zero is a zero-sugar line and comes in strawberry, chocolate mint, and vanilla.

6. -12 Degrees

With outlets in Bangsar Village, Datum Jelatek, and Melawati Mall, -12 Degrees specialises in vegan and sugar-free ice cream.

It was founded by Chloe Loo Ching Hsin, who first attempted making vegan ice cream upon learning of her son’s dairy and egg allergies.

Signature flavours include Salted Butter Pecan, Mint Chocolate Chip, Matcha, Hojicha, Pistachio, Musang King, Gingerbread, and Biscoff Crumbles with Salted Gula Melaka.

7. KindKones

An all-natural vegan ice cream brand, KindKones started in a home kitchen in 2017 with the goal of developing a “nice cream” that was better for people as well as the planet. Hence, the word “kind” in the brand.

It offers a range of various interesting flavour such as Blue Planet, Charcoal Vanilla, Keto Avocado Coconut, Mandarin and Pecan Praline, Pulut Hitam, Watermelon Strawberry Mint, and more.

The more classic flavours KindKones carries include Strawberry, Mint Choc Chip, Madagascan Vanilla Bean, and Chocolate Sorbet.

8. Kelava

Kelava, which is a portmanteau of the words kelapa (Malay for coconut) and love, was founded back in 2017. It started in a home kitchen, but was acquired by Berjaya Food Bhd.

As suggested by its name, the brand uses coconuts as a the main ingredient in the ice cream base. It carries six flavours of ice cream, namely Wild Berries, Onde Onde, Coconut Latte, Chocolate, Vanilla, and Salted Gula Melaka.

Vegan brand Verdanya’s line of ice creams is called Talivara, named after the founders’ daughters. The ice creams are made from coconut cream and cashew milk and are gluten-free.

A wide variety of flavours are available, with the bestselling one being Rocky Road. Other options include Raspberry Truffle, Chocolate Date, Mint Chip, Peanut Butter, Strawberry, Butterscotch, Vanilla Caramel Brownie, Lemon Berry Swirl, and Coffee Crackle.
