Datuk Ts. Mahadhir Aziz, the CEO of Malaysia Digital Economy Corporation (MDEC), will be stepping down from his role on August 31, 2024.

This is following the completion of his successful three-year tenure as CEO, which concludes at the end of this month.

As Mahadhir embarks on new challenges and opportunities, his departure opens the door for continued transformation at MDEC, building upon the solid foundation established during the transformative period under his leadership, a press release from MDEC stated.

Mahadhir first came into the role of CEO in September 2021 after the departure of its last CEO, the late Surina Shukri. Since then, he’s played a pivotal role in solidifying MDEC’s position in Malaysia’s digital ecosystem.

In its press release, MDEC shared that the government agency achieved significant milestones under Mahadhir’s leadership, including securing over RM170 billion in digital investments. His tenancy also oversaw the creation of over 85,000 jobs in the local tech industry.

But perhaps his most notable achievement as its CEO is transforming the Multimedia Super Corridor (MSC) initiative into Malaysia Digital (MD)

In turn, his efforts have helped to drive strategic digital investments, launched key national programmes such as the digital nomad visa, and spurred MDEC to surpass key targets. This includes the adoption of ecommerce by over 1.5 million MSMEs and recording RM144 billion in digitalisation investments.

Many of these achievements could partially be attributed to Mahadhir’s illustrious career background and experience

Prior to becoming MDEC’s CEO, he co-founded Futurise, a company under the Ministry of Finance with the sole purpose of accelerating Malaysia’s Regulatory Sandbox. Besides that, he’s had a long career of leading projects in the tech sector since 1998, and was a key player in modernising regulations for drone usage in Malaysian airspace.

As Mahadhir steps down to explore new opportunities, MDEC remains committed to sustaining its strategic direction.

No announcements were made on who will be appointed to take on this role and lead MDEC in the coming years. However, stakeholders can rest assured as a Management Council has been established to oversee the CEO’s responsibilities during this interim period.

“The Board and Management extends its deepest gratitude to Datuk Mahadhir for his leadership, dedication, and significant contributions to MDEC. The entire organisation wishes him the very best in his future endeavours and looks forward to his continued success,” the press release concluded.
